ABOUT PRO BOXING GLOVES

Pro boxing gloves are built for serious use: dense padding, a secure wrist closure and a fit that holds through hard rounds. The term covers two things: gloves worn in sanctioned professional fights, and pro-quality gloves for bag work, mitts and sparring. Fight gloves are lighter, usually 8 or 10 oz, and set by commission rules. Training and sparring gloves are heavier and more padded, and that’s what most shoppers here need.

How to Choose Pro Boxing Gloves

Start with how you’ll use them, then check weight, closure and fit.

Glove weight (oz) by use

Ounces measure padding, not hand size. More ounces means more cushioning and a bulkier glove.

Use

Typical weight

Pro fight   8 oz (lighter classes) or 10 oz (heavier classes)
Amateur competition   10–12 oz
Sparring   14–16 oz
Heavy bag   12–16 oz
Pad and mitt work   14–16 oz
Fitness and cardio   12–16 oz

Not sure? A 12 or 14 oz glove is a common all-around starting point.

Lace-up vs Velcro

Lace-up Velcro
Wrist support   Tightest, most adjustable   Good, quick to adjust
Putting them on   Usually needs a partner   Solo, in seconds
Best for   Sparring, fights, long sessions   Bag work, pads, everyday training

Padding, materials and fit

Padding is usually closed-cell foam, open-cell foam, horsehair or gel, often layered. Shells are genuine leather (more durable) or synthetic PU (lower cost). [PLACEHOLDER: name the actual padding and material specs of your best sellers.] A good glove feels snug but never painful, with fingers resting naturally in a fist and little wrist movement when you punch. Try gloves on over hand wraps, since wraps take up room.

Which Pro Boxing Gloves for Your Training

  • Heavy bag and pad work: 12–16 oz, solid knuckle padding. See boxing bag gloves.
  • Sparring: 14–16 oz, ideally lace-up. See boxing sparring gloves.
  • Fitness and cardio boxing: 12–16 oz, prioritize comfort. See fitness boxing gloves.
  • Beginners and youth: Velcro, 12–14 oz. See youth boxing gloves.
  • Custom or MMA crossover: See custom boxing gloves and MMA gloves.

How to Care for Your Gloves

Wipe them down after every session, air-dry with the wrist open, and store somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sun. Hand wraps keep sweat off the lining and extend the glove’s life.

Finish Your Kit

Pair your gloves with hand wraps, a mouth guard and headgear for sparring.

FAQ’s

What gloves do professional boxers use?
In fights, pros wear commission-approved lace-up gloves, usually 8 or 10 oz. For training, they switch to heavier 12–16 oz gloves.

What size boxing gloves should I get?
Pick by use: 12–16 oz for bag work, 14–16 oz for sparring. Oz measures padding, not hand size, so also check the S/M/L label.

Are lace-up or Velcro boxing gloves better?
Lace-up gives the tightest wrist support and is the pro-fight standard. Velcro is faster to put on and better for solo, everyday training.

How do I clean and care for boxing gloves?
Wipe them down after each session, air-dry with the wrist open, and store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
